Lotus Flower ( from a member's blog )

"Lotus flowers have strong symbolic ties to survivors. The lotus flower grows out of mud. Yet, it rises above the surface clean, blooms with remarkable beauty, and its beauty remains untouched by the mud. The flower closes and sinks underwater at night, but it rises and opens again at dawn. Lotus flowers have strong symbolic ties to survivors. They start as small flowers down at the very bottom of a pond and then slowly grow and rise towards the surface, continually moving towards the light. Once the lotus flower has reached the surface of the water, it begins to blossom and turns into a magnificent flower.

The lotus flower is a symbol for courage, purity, and awakening, and it mirrors survivors' journey toward healing and recovery. Like the lotus flower, survivors have been at the bottom of the pond but can rise above it to show their worth, courage, and untouched beauty."

Hi Debashis,

I would like to take this moment to share with you guidance I received as it relates to this particular piece, Today I Dedicate Myself. Much of the "excerpt" that is accredited to this poem by Sensei, is in fact extracted from the "Optimist Creed", written in 1912, by Christian Larsen.

You may search this original material for yourself. Please google it yourself. This creed was actually something that Christian Larsen wrote for his patients to recite daily as they struggled to overcome the challenges of mental illness.

Unfortunately, I realize that this material has been circulating throughout the SGI as something that President Ikeda has written. However, we should always be careful about this sort of mis-representation of Sensei's work. Just something to think about for future reference.

Please take good care of your health and continue to warmly encourage the members as we strengthen and develop our faith daily.

Best regards,
Frankie
